Ash Valentines Wednesday- Midweek Musing 2/14/24

Celebrating Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day Together: A Perfect Pair

It is unusual that Ash Wednesday and Valentines were the same day this year. There were lots of funny internet pictures and comments around this occurrence. However, the more I thought about this the more appropriate it seemed.

You see as we find ourselves marking both Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day together this year, I thought it was worth reflecting on the beautiful harmony between these seemingly contrasting observances.

Ash Wednesday serves as a poignant reminder of our mortality and human frailty. The ashes we receive on our foreheads symbolize the finite nature of our earthly existence, urging us to reflect on the brevity of life and the need for repentance and renewal.

Yet, in the midst of this somber introspection, Valentine's Day shines as a beacon of love and affection. It prompts us to celebrate the profound connections we share with others, expressing heartfelt sentiments and gestures of love.

In essence, the juxtaposition of these two observances serves as a powerful reminder of the greatest love story ever told—the story of Jesus Christ. His sacrificial love, epitomized by his death on the cross and triumphant resurrection, transcends human understanding.

As we wear the ashes on our foreheads, let us not forget that the cross they symbolize is empty, for Christ has conquered death. In this light, we could just as easily surround that cross with additional ashes in the shape of a heart, symbolizing the boundless love that God has for us all.

This Lenten season, as we journey towards Easter, let us embrace the dual themes of repentance and love. While Lent calls us to prayer, fasting, and reflection, it does so within the context of grace—the assurance of God's unending love and the promise of eternal life.

So let us approach this Lenten journey with hearts full of love, knowing that the ultimate destination is the joyous celebration of Christ's resurrection. May we emerge from this season renewed in spirit, steadfast in faith, and overflowing with the love that transforms hearts and lives.

Blessings to you on this Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day, as we embark on this journey of faith and love together.

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Alleluia Amen.
